When Townsville State High School set out to upgrade its ageing sports courts, it was a project close to the heart of Principal and proud alumnus Murray James. The surfaces hadn’t been upgraded in decades so now, as Principal, he has overseen an upgrade that will benefit a new generation of students and the school’s athlete development through the Tropics Sports Academy using this new facility.

With safety, performance, and school pride at the centre of the project, Advantage Sports & Leisure worked closely with the school to bring their vision to life, transforming eight multipurpose courts into a vibrant, modern space for students and the wider community to enjoy year-round.
The journey looked like this:
School-Funded Investment
This project was funded directly by Townsville State High School, reflecting the school’s dedication to providing a safe and high-quality sporting environment for its students. While this upgrade was independently financed, other schools, clubs, and community groups may be able to access external funding to support similar improvements. Design & Planning
The Advantage team collaborated with the school to design a refurbishment plan covering 4,950m² of courts, complete with precise line-markings for basketball, netball, futsal, pickleball, and volleyball. The courts feature a striking royal blue and mid-grey colour scheme, proudly showcasing the school’s logo.
Professional Installation
The Advantage crew carried out a full resurfacing process—cleaning, resurfacing, applying acrylic sports coatings, and precise line-marking. We also installed new sports equipment and perimeter fencing to meet modern Department of Education standards.
A Safer, Better Surface
Slip resistance and comfort were top priorities. With a new Rebound Ace Synpave surface, the courts are now safer, more forgiving underfoot, and built to handle daily school use and competitive play.
The Finished Space
The result is a striking set of courts that not only improve safety and performance but also stand as a centrepiece for the school community. The upgrade is more than fresh paint—it’s an investment in student wellbeing, school pride, and the future of sport on campus.

Projects like this show how a strong school vision, paired with professional delivery, can create spaces that inspire. For Townsville State High, the transformation is especially meaningful: the courts that once served their current principal as a student have now been reimagined for today’s players—and for generations to come.
